A New Era in Underwater Threat Detection

German defense technology company Helsing has made a groundbreaking announcement with the unveiling of its new autonomous underwater glider, SG-1 Fathom.

This cutting-edge device is designed to patrol the world’s oceans for up to three months at a time, providing unparalleled surveillance capabilities for underwater threats.

According to Helsing, the SG-1 Fathom is equipped with the company’s proprietary software platform and advanced AI system, Lura.

This sophisticated technology uses a large acoustic model to detect and classify acoustic signatures, such as the sounds made by ships and submarines, with unprecedented sensitivity and accuracy.

Lura’s ability to differentiate between specific vessels from within the same class and detect quieter signals sets it apart from other AI models, operating at speeds up to 40 times faster than human operators.

The use of Lura and SG-1 Fathom is expected to revolutionize maritime surveillance, providing navies with accurate intelligence at a fraction of the cost of traditional crewed anti-submarine warfare patrols.

A single operator can task and monitor hundreds of gliders from a maritime headquarters, unlocking new possibilities for underwater threat detection and deterrence.

Helsing’s Co-founder and Co-CEO, Gundbert Scherf, emphasized the importance of harnessing new technologies to protect critical infrastructure, national waters, and way of life. “Deploying AI to the edge of underwater constellations will illuminate the oceans and deter our adversaries, for a strong Europe,” he said.

The company is partnering with leading industry partners, including Blue Ocean Marine Tech Systems, Ocean Infinity, and Qinetiq, to scale and deliver Lura and SG-1 to customers.

With plans to deploy the system within the year, Helsing is poised to make a significant impact on the world of maritime defense.

As the company continues to push the boundaries of underwater surveillance, its innovative technology is set to redefine the landscape of maritime defense capabilities.

With the SG-1 Fathom and Lura, Helsing is leading the charge towards a more secure and sustainable future for the world’s oceans.
