The Pontiff Calls for Immediate Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid Amid Intensifying Conflict

Pope Leo XIV delivers his inaugural homily, calling for peace and humanitarian aid in response to the conflict in Gaza.

In a powerful and symbolic moment during his inaugural homily as the newly elected Pope, Leo XIV strongly condemned Israel’s recent escalation of military actions in Gaza. Speaking before a massive crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square on May 18, 2025, Pope Leo XIV called for an immediate ceasefire and a renewed commitment to peace and reconciliation in the Middle East.

Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church. He was elected on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis, and has since voiced a clear and uncompromising moral stance on justice, inclusion, and nonviolence.

In his address, the Pope stated, ‘We cannot remain silent in the face of hatred, violence, and exclusion. The blood of innocent civilians cries out to heaven.’ These words came as global concern grew over rising civilian casualties and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.

While the Israeli government has reiterated that its operations are defensive in nature, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the sanctity of all human life and called upon world leaders to act swiftly in favor of humanitarian aid, diplomacy, and sustained peace-building efforts.

As the first days of his papacy unfold, Leo XIV’s leadership appears marked by a determination to address global injustices head-on, blending spiritual guidance with direct appeals for peace in a deeply fractured world.
