Struggles on and off the Pitch Take Toll on Manchester City Midfielder

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has admitted to struggling this season due to a combination of off-field issues and an ankle injury suffered against Manchester United. The 24-year-old, who enjoyed his best Premier League campaign last term by scoring 19 goals and helping City to an unprecedented fourth top-flight title in a row, has managed only 10 goals in all competitions this term.
Foden suffered “bad” ligament damage to his ankle when tackled by United midfielder Casemiro during the goalless derby draw on April 6, forcing him to miss the next two games. Although he returned to training “quite early,” he has failed to score in his past 19 games for club and country, a run stretching back to January.
In an interview, Foden revealed that he had been dealing with off-field issues, including feeling physically and mentally burned out in January. He also faced derogatory chants about his mother during the game at Old Trafford, which City manager Pep Guardiola condemned as a “lack of class.”
Foden expressed his frustration with the season, stating, “It’s been difficult. It took a while to heal before I can push myself back in training, I had to look after it. It’s been a frustrating season for me.” He added that he is now focused on improving and getting back to his best, saying, “I know my standards and what I can reach. I’m looking forward to getting back.”
The upcoming Club World Cup, which starts in the US on June 14, may pose a challenge for Foden, who will need to balance his recovery with the demands of the competition. City have a quick turnaround this summer, and Foden acknowledged that the team is “mentally drained” from the season.
Foden’s availability for the England squad, which will be named by manager Thomas Tuchel on Friday, is also uncertain due to his ankle injury. He said, “Obviously it’s a difficult situation for me with the internationals right around the corner. It’s something we have to speak with the club and national team to see maybe if it’s better to rest and get my ankle fully 100% back how I want it.”
The future of Foden’s season, both with City and England, remains uncertain as he navigates the challenges of recovery and competition.
