Celebrity Stylists Share 8 Style Mistakes That Can Instantly Age You

Fashion is meant to be a fun and expressive outlet, allowing individuals to showcase their personality and style. However, according to celebrity stylists Amanda Massi and Kim Appelt, there are certain fashion mistakes that can instantly age a person. These style slip-ups can subtly shift how one’s overall look is perceived, often without them even realizing it.
Massi, who has worked with stars like Kate Upton and Grammy-winner Macy Gray, notes that relying on outdated trends can give a dated look. “Relying on styles that have fallen out of fashion, such as overly baggy jeans or dated prints, can make someone look older than they might be,” she explains. Instead, Massi suggests embracing modern trends by wearing pieces like straight-leg jeans or A-line skirts that feel current and flattering.
Appelt, who has styled actresses like Sarah Dugdale and is the author of Style for EveryBODY, agrees that sticking to outdated trends is a major fashion faux pas. “Capris, boxy suits, or heavy drop-waist dresses are examples of styles that can make someone look older than they might be and they hide the body in all the wrong places,” she says.
In addition to outdated trends, Appelt notes that certain types of hosiery can also age a person. “Shiny nude pantyhose are just a no,” she bluntly states. “They make you appear older, flatten your legs, and scream ‘office in 1997.’” Instead, Appelt suggests opting for modern tights, such as sheer blacks, tonal patterns, or subtle fishnets.
Footwear is also an important aspect of fashion that can instantly age a person. Massi notes that shoes that are worn out, outdated, or overly chunky can detract from an otherwise put-together outfit and create an unintended “older” look. “That’s why you should choose sleek, modern footwear like ballet flats, stylish loafers, or pointed kitten heels that offer both comfort and trendiness,” she suggests.
Denim styles can also age a person, according to Appelt. “Overly distressed jeans, anything super low-rise, and denim with wild embellishments can age you,” she says. “They had a moment. That moment has passed.” Instead, Appelt recommends trying a clean straight-leg or cropped flare pair of denim.
Eyewear can also play a significant role in aging a person, according to Appelt. “Tiny wire frames, heavy grandma readers, or dated plastic frames weigh your face down and make you look older,” she shares. “Try something like a light acetate, a bold modern cat eye, or an oversized square with lift. It’s like Botox without the needles.”
Wearing dated colors or patterns can also age a person, according to Massi. “Certain colors and patterns, such as pastels or overly busy prints, can feel matronly and age a person,” she notes. “A person should consider wearing vibrant jewel tones or richer neutrals instead that are more flattering and contemporary.”
Undergarments can also affect how a person’s clothing looks, according to Appelt. “Your base layers set the tone,” she explains. “A droopy bra or VPL (visible panty line) can wreck an otherwise killer outfit. The solution? Get fitted. Yes, even now. Especially now. Our bodies evolve, and your lingerie drawer should too. Foundational pieces are the real glow-up.”
Finally, wearing clothes that are too loose can also age a person, according to Massi. “Opting for oversized or baggy clothing can create a frumpy look, disguising the body’s natural shape and making one appear older,” she explains. “Instead, choose pieces that fit well, but are not restrictive, such as tailored blouses or slightly loose-fitting trousers that maintain structure while providing comfort.”
By avoiding these fashion mistakes and embracing modern trends, individuals can instantly look younger and more polished.
