A proposed new rugby union breakaway league, R360, has sparked concerns among England players that their international careers could be jeopardized by participating in the competition. The league, which is set to launch next year, aims to attract the world’s top players and give the sport its “Super Bowl moment” with a global franchise competition.

According to sources, players who quit the Premiership to compete in R360 risk becoming ineligible for the national side, as the Rugby Football Union is contractually obligated to only pick players who play in the top English league. The Professional Game Partnership (PGP), an eight-year deal announced in September 2024, has left some administrators questioning whether R360 will be able to attract the necessary investment and approval from governing bodies.

Despite these concerns, R360’s organizers, led by World Cup winner Mike Tindall and former Bath captain Stuart Hooper, are pushing forward with plans for a revolutionary franchise league. The competition would be played predominantly in the summer in major cities around the world, including London, Paris, and Los Angeles, and would feature the top 300 men’s and women’s players.

Tindall has stated that R360 is being launched in response to the club game’s failure to capture the same level of interest and investment as international rugby. The league aims to “unlock the potential of the women’s game” and provide a more appealing format for new audiences and younger fans. However, some senior figures in the game believe the proposals lack substance and will struggle to gain traction.

The proposed schedule for R360, which would take place in two blocks from April to June and August to September, has raised concerns about clashes with existing international competitions, including the southern hemisphere Rugby Championship and the women’s Six Nations. With investment from benefactors across other sports reportedly being sought, the future of R360 remains uncertain.
