Concerns Mount as Funding Bodies Weigh In

Allegations of rape and harassment at one of Britain’s most prestigious rowing clubs have sent shockwaves through the sport, with funding bodies Sport England and UK Sport expressing deep concern over the incidents. The Leander Club, which supplied more than half of Team GB’s rowers at the Paris Olympics, has been at the center of the controversy.
According to a report by the Telegraph, there have been three separate alleged rape incidents involving male rowers within the past five years. The incidents, which were described as “deeply concerning” by Sport England, have sparked outrage among rowing enthusiasts and raised questions about the culture within the sport.
In response to the allegations, women rowers at the club had taken to wearing white ribbons and pink vests in 2024 to protest against what was described as “the worst-kept secret in British rowing.” Several male members also joined them in protest, highlighting the growing awareness and support for victims of abuse within the sport.
Sport England, the funding body of grassroots sport in England, has raised the matter with British Rowing and urged the victims to report the incidents to the police. “These are deeply concerning allegations regarding both behaviors and cultures, and our thoughts are with those who have been impacted,” a statement from Sport England read. “It is vital that sports clubs are safe and welcoming, and that all issues are investigated swiftly and properly.”
UK Sport, which funds elite sport across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, has also weighed in on the issue. “Our thoughts are with those affected by the allegations which have recently been reported, and we take matters of integrity and safeguarding extremely seriously,” a statement from the organization read. “We encourage any member of staff or athlete on Olympic and Paralympic performance programmes to report allegations of unacceptable behavior to Sport Integrity, the confidential reporting line.”
The Leander Club has said that it takes all issues relating to the safeguarding of its athletes seriously and has strict procedures in place to investigate any formal complaints. The club’s statement read: “We have strict procedures in place to carefully examine any formal complaints and regularly review our club disciplinary processes to ensure they are fit for purpose, treating our athletes fairly and with respect.”
British Rowing has also stated that the safety of people taking part in the sport is its top priority and that it investigates all reported incidents fully and comprehensively. A spokesperson for the organization said: “As such there is a very limited amount that we can say when we are approached in connection with issues that fall into this category. What we are able to say categorically is that the safety of people taking part in our sport is the very first item of importance on our agenda.”
The allegations have sparked a wider debate about the culture within elite sports and the need for greater accountability and transparency. As the rowing community grapples with the fallout from these allegations, one thing is clear: the safety and well-being of athletes must be the top priority.
