New Features and Integration with Google Nest Ecosystem Highlight the Launch

ADT has officially launched its latest security system, marking a significant upgrade from its previous offerings and reviving some key features from the now-discontinued Nest Secure. Priced at $269 for the core package, the new system includes a redesigned base station with LED indicators that provide visual feedback on the system’s status, similar to the functionality seen in the Nest Secure before its discontinuation. The base station also features improved connectivity through DECT/ULE frequencies, offering a more stable and interference-free performance, which ADT claims significantly improves both the daily functionality and the installation process.

The new hardware includes an optional secondary keypad, smaller in size but with similar design elements, allowing users to place additional controls throughout their homes. ADT has also introduced a “Premium” door/window sensor, which allows for temporary bypass of the alarm, a feature previously praised in the Nest Secure’s “Detect” sensor. Sensors for motion, smoke, carbon monoxide, heat, and water leaks have been updated with the same DECT/ULE technology for enhanced performance. Additionally, users can opt for black covers for the sensors to help them blend in with their home decor if the default white design is not preferred.

ADT continues to offer compatibility with Google Nest hardware, allowing users to bundle in select Nest devices at a discount if they spend $349 or more. This includes Nest cameras, doorbells, and thermostats, which can be integrated into the ADT+ app for live feeds, notifications, and automation. The system is available in both self-install and professionally installed options, with the latter requiring a 36-month professional monitoring contract. The “Secure Monitoring Plan” costs $24.99 per month and appears to be a requirement for the initial purchase. However, ADT confirmed that after the first month of professional monitoring, the system can be used in a self-monitoring state without a monthly subscription, just like on the previous system.

In a recent call with ADT’s Chief Business Officer, Wayne Thorsen, it was revealed that the new system is built on a custom software platform designed for better integration with smart home devices, including Google’s Nest ecosystem. This platform also sets the stage for future features such as “Trusted Neighbor,” which will use Nest’s Familiar Faces technology to intelligently grant access to homes. This feature is expected to launch later this summer and is part of ADT’s broader vision to create a more intelligent and personalized security experience.

The ADT+ app, which recently received a major update, will continue to evolve alongside the new hardware and software platform. While Google Nest integration remains unchanged, ADT is hopeful for more features and enhancements in the future. The app can link up with your Nest cameras and doorbell to show live feeds, get notifications, and use the Nest Thermostat in automation and control it directly from the app.

Thorsen compared the current state of the new hardware to a new game console, emphasizing that while the hardware is already impressive, the best is yet to come with future software updates and features. ADT’s new system looks way better than what came before from the hardware alone, but it’s the software that should really make it something special. As the company continues to develop its platform, users can expect even more seamless integration with smart home ecosystems and unique features that enhance the overall security experience.

In addition to the hardware and software upgrades, ADT has also been working on expanding its ecosystem of compatible devices, with plans to support more third-party smart home products in the near future. This move is part of a broader industry trend toward more interconnected and intelligent home security solutions. As users continue to adopt smart home technologies, ADT’s new system is positioned to be a versatile and future-proof option for those looking to enhance their home security.
