Danish designer, artist, and author Malene Birger has long been celebrated for her minimalist and monochrome aesthetic, first made famous through her fashion label, By Malene Birger, which she founded in 2003. After more than two decades in the fashion industry—during which her designs were sold in over 42 countries—Birger felt the need for a new creative challenge. In 2014, she made the bold decision to step away from the fast-paced world of fashion, seeking a more introspective and artistic lifestyle.

Her transition into the world of visual art and interior design has been deeply personal and transformative. Birger traveled extensively, taking courses in clay and marble in Pietrasanta, Italy, where she studied under a dedicated tutor. This experience marked the beginning of her artistic journey, which has since flourished in her studio on the island of Mallorca. Here, she has developed a unique artistic voice, creating everything from hand-painted ceramics to bespoke interior designs.

Over the past 15 years, Birger has documented her creative evolution in three coffee table books published by the German publisher Teneues. These books, released in 2010, 2014, and 2022, offer a visual narrative of her journey through design, travel, and artistic exploration, and have been distributed in more than 72 countries. The books not only showcase her artistic growth but also reflect her deep connection to cultural and natural landscapes, from the Mediterranean to the Far East.

In addition to her art, Birger has launched a fine jewelry collection called GOLD&ME, which she describes as a continuation of her creative vision. Each piece is handmade in Greece, reflecting her deep connection to craftsmanship and heritage. The collection features delicate, minimalist designs that echo her signature aesthetic, and it has been well-received by fans and collectors alike. Her work is now available through her online shop, offering a curated selection of art, design, and jewelry.

Birger now lives in a serene finca on the southeast coast of Mallorca, surrounded by olive trees, almond trees, and the peaceful countryside. She finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the island, which she calls her true home. Her days are spent in solitude, painting, creating, and reflecting—practices she credits with helping her maintain focus and emotional balance. She also practices yoga daily, which she describes as essential to her well-being and creative process.

Birger’s artistic and creative journey is not just a departure from fashion, but a new chapter in her life—one that emphasizes mindfulness, sustainability, and the value of slowing down. Her work has become a celebration of simplicity, beauty, and the quiet power of self-expression.

Malene Birger’s journey from the fashion world to the quiet solitude of her studio in Mallorca is a testament to the power of reinvention. Her story is not just one of artistic exploration, but also of self-discovery, resilience, and the pursuit of a life lived with intention and beauty.
