The 19-Year-Old Prodigy Extends Championship Lead with Gutsy Drive

Kimi Antonelli has cemented his status as Formula 1’s breakout star, securing his third consecutive victory at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver started from pole and held off a relentless challenge from reigning world champion Lando Norris to win by 3.264 seconds, further extending his lead in the drivers’ championship.
The race, moved forward three hours due to thunderstorm threats, began in chaotic fashion. Antonelli locked up at Turn 1, allowing Charles Leclerc to briefly take the lead, while Max Verstappen spun out in the melee, dropping to 10th. Safety cars were deployed early after separate crashes involving Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly, neutralizing the field.
Mercedes executed a decisive strategy, pitting Antonelli on lap 27—before Norris—to gain a crucial undercut advantage. His strong out-lap allowed him to emerge just ahead of the McLaren driver, a move Antonelli called “key” to the victory. Despite reporting gearbox and throttle issues during the final laps, he maintained composure under intense pressure, managing tire wear and track limits to seal the win.
With 100 points, Antonelli now leads teammate George Russell by 20 in the standings. Mercedes also dominates the constructors’ championship with 180 points, a 70-point lead over Ferrari. Oscar Piastri completed the podium in third, while Leclerc was demoted to eighth after a late spin and 20-second penalty.
Team principal Toto Wolff hailed the performance as Antonelli’s “best race so far,” praising his maturity and composure. Russell admitted struggles with the track, finishing fourth after adopting setup changes inspired by his teammate. The season continues in three weeks at the Canadian Grand Prix, where Russell aims to reclaim momentum.
