Will O’Rourke will miss New Zealand’s home series against India as he continues rehabilitation from hamstring and calf injuries ahead of the Australian Test tour.

A cautious call before a demanding schedule
New Zealand fast bowler Will O’Rourke has been ruled out of the upcoming series against India as he continues rehabilitation from injuries to his left hamstring and calf, Reuters reported on October 10.
The 25-year-old tore his hamstring during the Test series against England in June and later injured his calf in training. New Zealand had expected him to feature in both one-day internationals and Tests against India.
Coach Rob Walter said the team had taken a conservative approach because pace-bowling resources will be especially important over the coming months.
Australia changes the calculation
The target is now a return before New Zealand’s four-Test tour of Australia beginning December 9. That series raises the cost of rushing O’Rourke back for an earlier assignment.
Fast bowlers face unusually high injury loads because repeated high-intensity spells place stress on hamstrings, calves, backs and shoulders. Managing workloads has therefore become a strategic part of squad selection rather than simply a medical issue.
India series still offers depth test
India’s tour begins with five Twenty20 internationals, followed by five one-day internationals and two Tests. O’Rourke’s absence will give other seamers an opportunity to establish themselves before the more demanding Australian campaign.
For New Zealand, the decision is a reminder that a long international calendar rewards depth as much as first-choice quality. Preserving one fast bowler for December may be more valuable than forcing an early return in October.
