In celebration of World Recycling Day on March 20, Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion community is taking a bold step toward sustainability with an innovative re-cycling initiative led by internationally acclaimed master tailor Professor Andrew M Ramroop OBE CMTT.

In a statement, CreativeTT said Trinidad and Tobago, recognizing the global environmental challenges posed by textile waste, is embracing circular fashion principles through this groundbreaking program that will debut during World Recycling Day 2025.

“Trinidad and Tobago has a rich tradition of creativity and craftsmanship in our fashion industry,” says Andrew Ramroop, leader of the T&T initiative. “By transforming leftover materials into beautiful, wearable garments, we’re not only reducing waste but also showcasing the incredible talent of our local designers while participating in a global movement toward sustainability.”

The initiative brings together the island’s diverse fashion community, including:

– Bespoke tailors repurposing high-quality fabric remnants

– Fashion designers creating zero-waste patterns for upcycled collections

– Local textile artists incorporating traditional Caribbean craftsmanship

“On March 20, these creators will unveil their recycled waste fabrics into designs in a media release fashion show, demonstrating how Trinidad and Tobago is embracing sustainable fashion practices while honouring its unique cultural heritage.

“This initiative marks Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to joining the global sustainability conversation.

“By starting with up-cycling in our fashion industry, we are taking a significant first step toward broader recycling practices that can benefit our beautiful twin island nation.”

The fashion presentation, choreographed by Richard Young, will be held at La Terraza, 16 Glenside Gardens, Tunapuna, featuring designs that incorporate up-cycled materials ranging from luxury fabric remnants to repurposed traditional textiles, all transformed into contemporary wearable sartorial art.
