Golf’s Top Contenders Gear Up for the Second Major of the Year

Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau have sparked excitement in the golf world with their recent victories, signaling that Rory McIlroy is not the only player dominating the sport. Both golfers won two of last year’s four majors, with Scheffler putting on a masterclass at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, where he won by eight strokes, and DeChambeau silencing questions about his ability to close out tournaments by holding off Charles Howell III at LIV’s Korea event.

Scheffler’s victory was particularly impressive, as he posted rounds of 61, 63, 66, and 63 to equal the PGA Tour record at TPC Craig Ranch. He was top in 14 statistical categories, including strokes gained tee to green and approach, putting average, total birdies, and scoring average on par three, four, and five holes. Scheffler’s 14th tour victory came in his final outing before the US PGA Championship, which starts on May 15.

DeChambeau, on the other hand, has been struggling with closing-round failures, but his victory at LIV’s Korea event has proved his major credentials. He was a close runner-up to Xander Schauffele at last year’s US PGA and overhauled a faltering McIlroy to win the US Open at Pinehurst last June.

The upcoming US PGA Championship is shaping up to be an exciting event, with Scheffler, DeChambeau, and McIlroy all in top form. Jordan Spieth, who closed with a bogey-free 62 at the Byron Nelson last Sunday, his lowest round for four years, is also a contender. Spieth, who has not added to his major tally since winning the Open eight years ago, has cause for confidence, but knows he will face the most talented pros in the hottest of form.

The US PGA Championship is becoming an increasingly enticing prospect, with several golfers vying for the top spot. As Scheffler put it, “I think we’re all fired up to come out here and compete. This week I was the best player. I have the week off, and we’ll see the week after who is the best player at the PGA.”
