Liverpool have made Víctor Muñoz the first signing of Andoni Iraola’s reign after triggering the £34.5 million release clause in the forward’s contract with Osasuna.

The 22-year-old Spain international is expected to sign a six-year agreement after completing a medical in the United States, where he is currently part of his country’s squad at the 2026 World Cup.

Liverpool’s intervention brought a dramatic conclusion to a transfer race that had appeared to be moving in Newcastle United’s favour. The Tyneside club had held advanced negotiations over a deal for Muñoz, but Liverpool acted quickly by meeting the full value of his release clause.

The move represents an early statement from Iraola as he begins reshaping the squad around a faster and more aggressive style of football. The Spanish coach is understood to have followed Muñoz closely during his development in La Liga and encouraged Liverpool to accelerate their longstanding interest in the player.

Muñoz’s versatility is central to his appeal. Naturally comfortable operating from the left, he can play on either wing and is also capable of appearing through the centre. His pace, direct running and willingness to attack defenders should give Iraola several options across Liverpool’s forward line.

Those qualities appear particularly suited to a coach whose teams have traditionally relied on intense pressing, quick transitions and vertical attacking football. Muñoz can stretch defensive lines with his speed, carry the ball over distance and contribute in multiple positions without requiring a major change in structure.

The forward arrives after a breakthrough campaign with Osasuna that established him as one of the most closely watched young attackers in Spanish football. His performances also earned him a place in Spain’s senior team, and he scored on his international debut against Serbia.

His development has taken him through two of Spain’s most prominent footballing institutions. Muñoz spent time in Barcelona’s academy before joining Real Madrid’s youth system, eventually making senior appearances for the Spanish capital club before moving to Osasuna in search of regular football.

That decision proved decisive. Greater responsibility in Pamplona allowed him to demonstrate the explosive acceleration and positional adaptability that attracted interest from several European clubs, including Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen.

For Newcastle, losing the player at such a late stage represents a significant transfer setback. The club had identified Muñoz as an important attacking target and believed it was well positioned to complete the signing before Liverpool entered the decisive phase of negotiations.

Liverpool’s willingness to pay the clause in full removed the need for prolonged discussions with Osasuna and allowed the club to secure the player before competing offers could be finalised.

The deal may also provide an early indication of Liverpool’s recruitment strategy under Iraola. Rather than pursuing only established stars, the club appears prepared to invest heavily in younger players possessing the physical and tactical characteristics required by the new head coach.

Muñoz is not yet a finished product, and the size of the fee will create immediate expectations. His attacking output will need to improve as he adjusts to the speed and intensity of the Premier League.

However, Liverpool believe they are acquiring a player whose strongest qualities can be developed within Iraola’s system. At 22, he combines significant experience with room for further growth, while his ability to cover several attacking roles reduces the risk associated with such a substantial investment.

The first transfer of a new managerial era often carries symbolic importance. In Muñoz, Liverpool have chosen a player defined by speed, versatility and potential—the same qualities likely to shape the club’s football under Iraola.
