British tennis star Emma Raducanu has overcome a tough opponent to reach the second round of the Madrid Open, defeating Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands 7-6(4), 6-4.

The 22-year-old, who reached the quarterfinals in Miami, her most impressive performance since her US Open triumph, showed remarkable resilience and adaptability in her first clay-court match of the season. Despite struggling to find her best level for a sustained period, Raducanu drew on her full arsenal of shots to outlast Lamens, a quality opponent known for her potent topspin forehand and excellent rally tolerance.

“I’m happy with how I worked my way into the match,” Raducanu said after the win. “I played an opponent in great form who has won a lot of matches on clay, so I knew I had to play really well to win. I don’t think I played my best level, but I think I competed really well.”

Raducanu’s victory marked a significant step forward in her bid to establish herself at the highest levels of the sport. The former British No 1 has faced a series of tough losses, injuries, and self-sabotaging decisions in the past, but has shown a willingness to learn and adapt.

In a post-match interview, Raducanu acknowledged the challenges of playing on clay, a surface she has had limited experience on. “It’s for sure different stepping into the competition, especially on clay,” she said. “I haven’t played many matches on this surface, so it does feel a little foreign to me.”

Raducanu’s next test comes in the form of 24th seed Marta Kostyuk, a formidable opponent who will push her to her limits. But for now, the British star can take pride in her gritty win over Lamens, a testament to her growing maturity and determination.

In other news, British tennis player Sonay Kartal has joined Raducanu and Katie Boulter in reaching the second round, defeating Jaqueline Cristian 6-2, 7-5. Kartal will next face 17th seed Elina Svitolina, while Francesca Jones fell to Dayana Yastremska in a closely contested match.
