From Humble Beginnings to Red Carpet Success

Sheraz Pompey, a Kansas City fashion designer, has been making waves in the local fashion scene for over a decade. With a passion for style and self-expression, Pompey has built a reputation as a talented and innovative designer, creating custom looks for clients from all walks of life. In a recent interview with the Star’s culture and identity reporter J.M. Banks, Pompey shared his story, from his early days as a fashion enthusiast to his current status as a respected designer in the Kansas City community.
Growing up in Kansas City, Pompey’s love for fashion was sparked by his teenage years, when he began experimenting with creative styling and piecing together unique outfits from items he had borrowed from his siblings. His interest in fashion design was further fueled by a half-semester course he took in high school, where he learned the basics of design and pattern-making. Under the guidance of his teacher, Pamela Lucas, who still teaches today and has her own fashion brand, Pompey developed a solid foundation in fashion design.
After graduating, Pompey continued to pursue his passion, working part-time as a designer while holding down a full-time job at UPS. He credits his experience working at UPS for teaching him the importance of attention to detail and time management, skills that he has carried over into his design business.
It wasn’t until he was asked to create a collection for a local fashion show that Pompey’s big break came. The show, held at the Jackson Museum, was a turning point in his career, as he received rave reviews and began to gain recognition for his work. Encouraged by the response, Pompey decided to take the leap and quit his full-time job to focus on his design business full-time.
Today, Pompey is the in-house designer for The Blueprint KC, a boutique store he co-owns with his sister in Grandview. His designs are known for their originality and creativity, often featuring unique draping and flowing silhouettes. Pompey’s inspiration comes from a variety of sources, including fashion shows, magazines, and big-name designers like Gucci and Balmain. He also draws inspiration from local designers and smaller creatives on Instagram, people who share his passion for self-expression and individuality.
As a stylist, Pompey has worked with a wide range of clients, from high school students to brides and grooms. He specializes in customization, creating one-of-a-kind looks that reflect each client’s personality and style. Pompey’s approach to design is centered on pushing boundaries and taking risks, often resulting in show-stopping outfits that turn heads.
One of Pompey’s most memorable experiences was hosting the black carpet at the Kansas City People’s Choice Awards, where he designed a gold, armor-inspired look with his best friend Gabby. The outfit was a hit, and Pompey’s attention-grabbing style helped him connect with attendees and spark meaningful conversations about fashion and self-expression.
When asked about the importance of representation in the fashion industry, Pompey emphasized the need for young Black creatives to see designers like him succeeding in Kansas City’s local fashion scene. He believes that representation is key to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for marginalized communities.
“For young Black creatives, it’s essential to see designers like me succeeding in Kansas City,” Pompey said. “It shows that it’s possible to break into the industry and make a name for yourself, even in a city like Kansas City, where the fashion industry is still developing.”
Pompey also highlighted the importance of networking and building connections within the industry. “In Kansas City, connections can lead to higher-paying clients and opportunities with celebrities,” he said. “I’ve worked with a few Chiefs players, and those came through people I knew. So my advice is: don’t give up, always keep learning, build your skills, and take that leap. Take risks. That’s how you grow in this industry, especially here.”
As the local fashion scene continues to grow and evolve, Sheraz Pompey remains a shining example of what can be achieved with passion, creativity, and determination. His story serves as a reminder that fashion is not just about clothes, but about self-expression, individuality, and the power of creativity to bring people together.
