Greece was left stunned after an elderly man carried out two separate shotgun attacks in Athens, injuring five people in a violent episode that unfolded across the capital during the morning hours and ended with the suspect’s arrest several hours later in the western port city of Patra.

Authorities said the 89-year-old Greek national opened fire at two different locations, triggering panic among residents and prompting a large-scale police operation. The attacks, which investigators described as highly unusual because of the suspect’s age and the coordinated nature of the shootings, immediately raised concerns about public safety and mental health support for isolated elderly citizens.

Emergency services rushed to both scenes shortly after the first reports of gunfire. Witnesses described moments of confusion and fear as pedestrians sought shelter and nearby businesses closed their doors while police units secured the affected areas.

According to preliminary findings, the suspect used a shotgun during the assaults, injuring five individuals before fleeing the city. The victims were transported to local hospitals, where medical staff treated injuries ranging from minor wounds to more serious trauma. Officials later stated that none of the victims were believed to be in immediate life-threatening condition.

Greek police launched an extensive search operation involving patrol units, highway officers and port authorities after investigators determined the suspect had left Athens following the shootings. Security alerts were distributed across transport hubs as officers attempted to track his movements.

The man was eventually located and detained inside a hotel near the port of Patra, one of Greece’s main maritime gateways to Western Europe. Investigators said he had allegedly intended to board a ferry bound for France before officers intercepted him.

Police sources indicated that the suspect surrendered without resistance during the arrest. Images broadcast by local television networks showed a heavy police presence near the hotel as investigators escorted the elderly man into custody.

Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed a clear motive for the attacks, though early reports suggest the suspect may have had longstanding personal grievances connected to at least one of the locations targeted. Detectives are also examining the man’s psychological condition and social circumstances in an effort to understand what led to the violent outburst.

The case has generated intense discussion across Greece, where incidents involving firearms remain relatively rare compared with many other European countries. The fact that the suspect was nearly 90 years old added another layer of shock to a nation already grappling with questions surrounding social isolation, economic hardship and access to healthcare for older citizens.

Residents in the affected neighborhoods described the attacks as surreal. Several witnesses said they initially believed the loud blasts were construction noises or traffic-related disturbances before realizing shots had been fired.

One shop owner near the first attack site said customers threw themselves to the floor moments after hearing the gunfire. Another resident reported seeing frightened pedestrians running through the street while emergency sirens echoed across the district.

Government officials condemned the violence and praised the rapid response of law enforcement agencies that coordinated the nationwide search. Security measures around transportation centers were briefly heightened during the operation to ensure the suspect could not leave the country.

Criminologists interviewed by Greek media noted that violent incidents involving elderly suspects are exceptionally uncommon, making the case particularly difficult to analyze. Experts said advanced age does not eliminate the possibility of extreme behavior, especially in situations involving untreated mental health conditions, personal desperation or prolonged social alienation.

The investigation is expected to focus on how the suspect obtained the weapon, whether he acted entirely alone and what preparations may have preceded the attacks. Officers are also reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses from both crime scenes as prosecutors prepare formal charges.

Meanwhile, the five injured victims continue recovering under medical supervision, while communities across Athens attempt to process an event that has unsettled many residents and reignited debate over public security and support systems for vulnerable citizens.

For many Greeks, the incident represents a disturbing reminder that violence can emerge unexpectedly even in places and circumstances that appear ordinary. As the investigation continues, authorities face growing pressure to provide answers about how a man of such advanced age was able to carry out two attacks and nearly escape the country before being stopped.
