The Fashion House Cements Its Watchmaking Legacy at Watches and Wonders 2026
Chanel has decisively elevated its horological standing with a comprehensive 2026 update to its iconic J12 line, unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2026. The expansion, which spans from a delicate 28 mm to a commanding 42 mm, is anchored by the official induction of the coveted matte blue ceramic—known as “midnight bleue”—into the permanent collection, a move that signals the J12’s evolution from a fashion statement to a cornerstone of modern luxury watchmaking.
The new J12 Bleu, developed over five years, is now available in 33 mm and 38 mm sizes, powered by the COSC-certified Calibre 12.1 and 12.2 movements. This follows the immense success of its limited 2025 release, which resonated with both fashion insiders and serious watch collectors. As Frédéric Grangié, president of Chanel watches and fine jewelry, stated, the achievement represents a new level of mastery over ceramic, a material the house now controls from raw pellet to finished product and even supplies to other brands.
The lineup’s technical prowess is exemplified by the J12 Superleggera 42 mm, a sleek, high-contrast model in matte black ceramic and steel, featuring a Kenissi movement and a bold red arrow date indicator. This, alongside new miniature 28 mm quartz models and the diamond-embellished Golden Black limited editions, demonstrates a brand operating at the intersection of haute horlogerie and haute couture.
This ceramic mastery, born from the original 2000 J12’s revolutionary use of the material, underscores Chanel’s vertically integrated watchmaking operation in Switzerland. The process involves heating ceramic to over 1,300°C, followed by meticulous machining and polishing with diamond powder to achieve a finish “smooth as silk.” Today, Chanel is one of only three groups in Switzerland capable of full in-house ceramic production and serves as a supplier to other luxury brands.
With the J12 Bleu now a permanent fixture, the house has transformed a fleeting innovation into a lasting legacy, proving that in the world of luxury, true desirability is timeless.
