The Danish rider claimed the first yellow jersey of the 2026 Tour after Visma-Lease a Bike powered to victory in Barcelona’s opening team time trial.

Jonas Vingegaard delivered the first major statement of the 2026 Tour de France on Saturday, seizing the yellow jersey after Visma-Lease a Bike won the opening team time trial in Barcelona.
The 19.6-kilometer stage, staged around the Catalan capital, immediately placed the Tour’s general classification contenders under pressure. Visma-Lease a Bike handled the technical course with precision, finishing in 21 minutes and 47 seconds and beating Netcompany Ineos by eight seconds. UAE Team Emirates-XRG, led by Tadej Pogačar, finished third, 12 seconds behind Vingegaard’s squad.
For Vingegaard, the result was more than a stage victory. It marked his return to the Tour de France yellow jersey for the first time in three years and gave him an early advantage over Pogačar, his greatest rival and the defending champion. The Dane, a two-time Tour winner, now begins the race with a symbolic and tactical lead in what is expected to be one of the most closely watched editions in recent years.
Visma’s performance was especially notable because the team entered the stage without Wout van Aert, who was absent through illness. Despite that setback, the Dutch squad executed a disciplined ride, with Matteo Jorgenson and Davide Piganzoli helping drive the final phase before Vingegaard surged on the Montjuïc climb to secure the decisive margin.
Netcompany Ineos came close to upsetting the favorites, with Filippo Ganna emerging as one of the strongest individual performers after his team was disrupted by a puncture. But Visma’s cohesion and late acceleration proved decisive, leaving Ineos second and UAE forced to settle for third.
The result gives Vingegaard an early psychological edge over Pogačar, who is chasing another Tour crown after winning the previous two editions. Although 12 seconds is a small gap in a three-week race, the opening stage underlined that Visma has arrived with both form and confidence.
Beyond the main favorites, the first day also produced encouraging signs for several contenders. Juan Ayuso moved into the white jersey as the best young rider, while Remco Evenepoel and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe showed enough strength to remain firmly in the early general classification picture.
The Tour continues on Sunday with a 169-kilometer hilly stage from Tarragona to Barcelona, where the terrain could again test the contenders before the race settles into its broader rhythm. For now, however, the opening image of the 2026 Tour belongs to Vingegaard: back in yellow, backed by a powerful team, and already ahead in the battle for Paris.
